Our Past, Present and Future

College Settlement Past

College Settlement’s roots go way back. Founded in 1892 to provide social, cultural, and educational programs for the immigrants of South Philadelphia, the Agency operated a Settlement House in Philadelphia at Fourth and Christian Streets. The College Settlement Camp was founded in 1922 by Anna Freeman Davies. A detailed history of our organization can be found on The College Settlement History Page.

The Outdoor School began offering residential environmental education programs on the College Settlement property in 1973. The facilities are open for school participation during the months of March through May and September through December.

College Settlement Future

We are always creating new lessons, unique activity locations and enhancing our program variety.  We are always creating ways to help more opportunities for schools. We have expanded our day trip availability. A day trip is a great way to introduce younger students to College Settlement before they come for an overnight trip. Contact us for more details.

In 2019, we added 2 new pavilions by the upper and lower villages. These give us more areas for activities when we get too much sunshine or a bout of heavy “liquid sunshine.”  We completely replaced our wetland boardwalk to make it more wheelchair accessible – opening up access to the campfire and group challenge areas.

We also continuing the development of our new Group Challenge course on our day camp property with help from our friends at Americorps NCCC who hopefully will send another crew our way in the spring of 2020.

There is always something cool going on at College Settlement!

Do not try to satisfy your vanity by teaching a great many things. Awaken people's curiosity. It is enough to open minds, do not overload them. Put there just a spark. If there is some good inflammable stuff, it will catch fire. - Anatole France
